Nicaragua Programme Review

In 2008, the NIMD programme in Nicaragua facilitated a self-assessment of the most important political parties, published a study of the country’s political history, and organized a series of radio debates on political issues, bringing together politicians, scholars, representatives of the private sector, civil society and the international community.

Interest of national and international organizations in the agenda of NIMD Nicaragua increased

In September 2008 the Media & Politics programme organized the concluding seminar of the first phase of the Media & Politics programme in Antigua (Guatemala). In the same month further planning took place about the second phase of the programme. Lack of funds, however, made those plans not viable.

Sufficient institutional capacity for programme development & management

Presence of NIMD Nicaragua strengthened with political leverage and sound management.

In 2008 NIMD started the legalization process of its presence in Nicaragua. At the end of the year this process was still pending. NIMD’s representation ended in 2008 with good relations with the political parties as with the international donor community.

Nicaragua office established

The presence of NIMD in Nicaragua was realized through a Nicaraguan representative who had a key function vis-à-vis local stakeholders, in linking NIMD headquarters, UNDP and RNE, and in taking care of the implementation of NIMD’s programme activities in the country. Due to the financial limitations the NIMD office in Nicaragua has not been officially established nor in organizational terms assessed.

Programme specific support & monitoring provided by NIMD headquarters

NIMD has actively supported the programme in Nicaragua. This was necessary because of the limited size of the NIMD representation in Nicaragua (one staff member). NIMD headquarters staff also performed four monitoring and networking missions, in January, March, August and September.

Relations with UNDP and RNE were strengthened, and the progress of the work and the political developments in the country discussed. Contacts with government officials and political party leaders helped to further the (political) mission of NIMD in Nicaragua. In October NIMD headquarters staff went to Nicaragua to assist NIMD’s representative in Nicaragua in the definition of the new year plan 2009.
