In 2008 the NIMD programme in Mozambique has facilitated a series of debates and dialogue sessions at the provincial level. RENAMO and FRELIMO party representatives participated in two regional NIMD activities.
Through thematic meetings where representatives of the two dominant political parties RENAMO and FRELIMO meet, such as the Communications Conference for political parties and the media organised by NIMD in 2008, interparty dialogue is nurtured. There is growing recognition by both major parties in Mozambique that democracy cannot function without opposition.
Relations between political parties and civil society
Voice and accountability can only be achieved if people are informed and dare to give their opinion on political developments. In 2008 the NIMD programme in Mozambique focused on grassroots participation in political debates in four provinces. In these debates representatives of political parties and civil society organisations often discussed politics for the first time in public.
Prospects for interparty dialogue
High level representatives of the ruling party RENAMO, opposition party FRELIMO and a network of extraparliamentary opposition parties have indicated that they intend to participate in an initial meeting to discuss the formation of a interparty dialogue platform.
