On 19 February, a graduation ceremony was held in Chimoio, Mozambique, for the first graduates of the iLEDA School in Mozambique project.

This is a pilot training project in which NIMD works together with IDASA and the Africa Forum to strengthen the local capacities for citizen democratic leadership training.

The project, which began in September 2009, consisted of two phases. Phase one was a pilot 'train the trainers' project, with the capital Chimoio as training venue. In Phase 2 these trainers went on to train grassroots and community leaders in Manica Province.

The graduation ceremony was held in the presence of the mayors of Chimoio and Manica, as well as representatives from the provincial authorities, civil society organisations and the media. In total five trainers and twenty one citizen leaders received a certificate.

The iLEDA School in Mozambique has benefitted from the knowledge and expertise of the NIMD-assisted Democracy Schools project in Indonesia.

This year, iLEDA will continue with the citizen leadership training programme, making use of the first five Mozambican graduate trainers. The expectation is that the training will also involve local political parties, as well as provincial and local assemblies.
