Capacity development in form of training is increasingly becoming a common feature of the work of NIMD and its partners. In an effort to contribute to the efforts being made in this area, NIMD and International IDEA organised a two week long course on 'BRIDGE Training the Facilitators' (TtF) that took place in Pretoria, South Africa on 6-17 February 2011.

NIMD, through its Africa Regional Programme (ARP) supported the participation of 14 people drawn from its partner programme countries in:

  • Latin America (2);
  • Georgia (1);
  • Africa (7);
  • from its HQ in The Hague (3); and
  • from its Africa Regional Programme (1).

The NIMD supported participants were joined by others from:

  • the South African Independent Electoral Commission (3);
  • Commonwealth Secretariat (1); and
  • International IDEA South Africa (2).

This training was held within the framework of the Strategic Partnership Agreement (SPA) that has been signed between IDEA and NIMD.

The 10-day training workshop was designed to train participants on effective facilitation skills, different techniques and expertise on how to conduct training effectively in an adult learning environment. Upon successful completion of the course the participants received a partial accreditation (Semi-Accreditation Certificate), which is a prerequisite for conducting BRIDGE training courses.

The facilitation and training skills gained in this course will go a long way in enhancing the capacity of NIMD and its partners whose work largely revolves around facilitating high level inter-party dialogue platforms and strategic democratic reform initiatives in the various NIMD partner countries.

BRIDGE (Building Resources in Democracy, Governance and Elections) is the world’s foremost training curriculum on electoral processes. It is a partnership between 5 leading organisations;

  • International IDEA;
  • UNDP;
  • the United Nations Electoral Assistance Division;
  • IFES; and
  • the Australian Electoral Commission.
