With regret the NIMD has received the news about the sudden decease of Ghanaian President John Atta Mills. He was the President of Ghana since 2009 and was to seek re-election in December this year. The NIMD will remember Atta Mills as a tireless defender of democracy in Ghana and Africa. The NIMD and all her partners extend their condolences to the family of former President Mills, the Government and the People of Ghana.
NIMD realises that these and the coming days will be very challenging to Ghana as the nation comes to terms with this untimely loss of her leader. We, however, have no doubt that as a beacon of hope on the continent, Ghana will manage. We applaud the smooth transition that has taken place and we trust that the new leadership will find the necessary strength, wisdom and inspiration to move on in serving the people of Ghana and in the deepening of multiparty democracy in this country, particularly as the country prepares for the general elections that are due in December 2012.
