On September 14, 2009 Ecuador’s Vice President Lenin Moreno received the director and staff of the Netherlands Institute for Multiparty Democracy (NIMD) and its Ecuadorean partner Ágora Democratica.

Acknowledging NIMD’s role in raising public awareness about Ecuador’s new Constitution, Mr Moreno observed that NIMD and the Ecuadorean government “are on the same path" when it comes to the promotion of democratic participation.

The Vice President insisted that democracy is also served by better education, healthcare, and joint efforts of the public and private sectors to stimulate production.

Acknowledging that "political and social justice go hand in hand", NIMD Director Roel von Meijenfeldt said that Ecuador’s new Constitution “is a gift to many other countries that seek legal reforms as they can learn from the example”.

National Assembly

After meeting the Vice President, Mr von Meijenfeldt also paid a visit to Ecuador's National Assembly. Accompanied by the Coordinator of Ágora Democratica, Ernesto Aranibar, and NIMD Regional Director for Asia and Latin America Pepijn Gerrits, he was received by the President of the Assembly, Ms Irina Cabezas.

In Ecuador NIMD works with International IDEA on the joint programme Ágora Democrática to promote inclusive politics and provide technical assistance to lawmakers. The programme has contributed to provisions for women’s political and economic rights in Ecuador’s new constitution, and helped design a new Electoral and Political Parties law.
