NIMD was present at the European Development Days (EDD) in Stockholm, Sweden, from 22-24 October. We shared a booth at the exhibition with the European Partnership for Democracy (EPD). Together with the African democracy institute Idasa and the Africa Forum, we presented the initiative for Leadership and Democracy in Africa (iLEDA).
The EDD is a major conference of European development agencies and NGOs, organised every year at a different location. Held in Stockholm, Sweden, this year’s conference featured 'democracy and development' as one of the main themes. Because of this, NIMD and other democracy assistance organisations are well represented at the exhibition and in the seminars. NIMD friends and partners participating in the conference include the European Partnership for Democracy (EPD), Idasa and, of course, Stockholm-based International IDEA.
The Dutch Minister for International Cooperation Bert Koenders visited the NIMD booth at the fair on the first day of the conference (see picture: Mr Koenders is on the left, with NIMD Director Roel von Meijenfeldt).
Democracy and development
On request of the Swedish Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the European Centre for Development Policy Management (ECDPM) has prepared a concise paper on the conference theme. The paper suggests that democracy assistance focused on political accountability and participation helps states deliver better development outcomes.
Democratic leadership initiative
At the EDD, NIMD, IDASA and the Africa Forum presented the initiative for Leadership and Democracy in Africa (iLEDA). iLEDA is a democracy training programme for political and civic leaders from across Africa, with an iLEDA Academy in South Africa and an iLEDA School in Mozambique.
