NIMD expresses its support for the democratically elected government of Ecuador.
On 30 September a group of police started an uprising against the democratically elected government of Ecuador. The uproar rapidly spread around the country and put the established democratic order, political stability and public security at risk. Rumours of a possible coup d’etat have further fuelled an already tense situation.
NIMD is concerned about the events and urges all actors to adhere to the democratic principles as guaranteed in the Ecuadorian Constitution and the Inter American Democratic Charter.
NIMD supports the duly elected government and president of Ecuador and urges all actors to engage in a democratic dialogue to avoid any violence.
