After nine years at the helm of NIMD, Roel von Meijenfeldt has decided to resign as Executive Director.
Mr von Meijenfeldt, who will soon reach retirement age, considers the current reorganisation at NIMD a timely moment to hand over executive responsibilities to a successor.
The Board of NIMD has expressed its profound appreciation for the leadership provided by Roel von Meijenfeldt, and for the tangible and lasting contribution he has made to the advancement of democracy during his tenure.
Mr von Meijenfeldt has agreed to continue serving the Board of NIMD as an Advisor. Meanwhile, pending the appointment of a new Executive Director, Deputy Director Wim Bakker has assumed executive responsibilities.
Under Roel von Meijenfeldt’s leadership, NIMD has grown into an internationally acclaimed democracy assistance organisation with programmes in 16 emerging democracies. In these countries NIMD has forged enduring partnerships with political parties, thereby investing in interparty dialogues, locally owned political reforms and democratic consolidation.
Mr von Meijenfeldt remains active in the international network of democracy assistance practitioners inter alia as Chairman of the Brussels-based European Partnership for Democracy (EPD).
