Six representatives of the 3 parties that are represented in the Mozambican parliament (Frelimo, Renamo and the Democratic Movement of Mozambique) visited Ghana and Mali on 11-15 April. The visit was supported by NIMD. The visits have helped to make more people in both countries aware of the usefulness of exchanges in Africa as well as the facilitation of such exchanges by NIMD.

Ghana

The Mozambican delegation visited an NIMD-supported programme of the Institute of Economic Affairs in Accra, Ghana to learn about the management of elections there. Given the fact that Ghana has seen 2 peaceful transfers of power between the 2 main parties, while Mozambique has not witnessed a similar experience since its independence in 1975, there was lot to compare.

The Mozambican delegation was given a summary of political developments in Ghana, followed by formal and informal meetings with their Ghanaian counterparts. They were also received by the Electoral Commission, an entity that has established a very solid reputation in Ghana.

Mali

The process of peer learning between African politicians continued in Mali. The Malian political parties and the NIMD-assisted Centre Malien pour le dialogue interpartis et la démocratie (CMDID) welcomed the Mozambican delegation.

Special area of attention in Mali included the cooperation between the political parties and the CARI (the Supporting Committee for Institutional Reform). This element focused on the formulation of reform proposals for the election management structure in Mali. Another area of attention was the importance of interparty dialogue platforms in reaching consensus on substantial reforms.

Both visits evoked substantial local media coverage.
