On Saturday 29 October the Africaday will be held in The Hague. NIMD is organising a workshop on African elections with international guests. Come and join us in the debate.
As part of a day filled with formal and informal meetings on Africa, NIMD is hosting a workshop around the documentary 'An African Election'. There are still a some places left. You can register for this seminar/debate on arrival at the Hague University.
Jarreth Merz, born in Switzerland, raised in Ghana and living in the US, depicts the true power of the people of Africa in his documentary on the 2008 Ghanaian elections entitled ‘An African Election’. His documentary was very well received at the International Documentary Festival Amsterdam (IDFA) earlier this year.
During this workshop a summary of the film is shown after which the producer himself will elaborate on the political situation in Ghana and its effect on the people. He invites you to discuss with him the challenges that a change of power bring.
Democracy is not a given, it needs constant work by the people and the politicians. Ghana has shown that democratic transitions do not come easily, but with the right people in the right place, history can be made. Ghana counts as a political example to the rest of Africa. With young democracies emerging such as Tunisia and Egypt, best practices such as Ghana are empowering for the politicians of the future.
The workshop is opened by NIMD board member and mayor of Wassenaar mister Jan Hoekema (D66) who will give an introduction on democracy in Africa and why it’s more then just elections.
