A new era for NIMD

Portret Hans Bruning
02 December 2011

A new era for NIMD commences. As of 1 December 2011, Hans Bruning (54) is appointed as the new Executive Director of NIMD. Hans (54) has functioned as the Executive Director ad interim at NIMD since March 2011. His biggest priority during the past months was to secure NIMD’s funding for the next four years, a mission in which he succeeded.

The organisation is very pleased with the appointment of Hans and is looking forward to continuing working with him in the future.

Hans Bruning: “Especially now, with all the development within the Arab Spring, the promotion of dialogue and democracy is more relevant then ever. The shaping of democracy is a challenge that requires continues effort and persistence and is a process I readily connect to.”

Hans Bruning has an extensive track record in development cooperation, civil society and politics. He started his career as assistant to a Member of Parliament and has been active in several positions, among others as Director of Development Organisation ICCO and as Director for International Programmes of CNV, one of the Dutch labour unions.

Thanks to the new funding, NIMD is currently working on a Multi Annual Plan for 2012-2015 with a new focus on the developments in the Middle East and Northern Africa (MENA), as well as continuing the current programs and initiatives. In 2011, NIMD started new partnerships in Tunisia and Egypt while also exploring the possibilities of cooperation in Benin, South Sudan and Honduras. In 2012 NIMD will be active in the following countries: Bolivia, Burundi, Colombia, Ecuador, Egypt, Georgia, Ghana, Guatemala, Indonesia, Kenya, Malawi, Mali, Mozambique, Tanzania, Tunisia, Uganda and Zimbabwe.

In the next four years, NIMD also aims to improve the sharing of experience and expertise among its partner network. Part of this ‘linking and learning’ is to use the expertise of politicians around the globe in order to allow local initiatives to work more efficiently. This network will be brought together during the 2012 Partnership Days in the Netherlands.

In 2011, NIMD has entered into two strategic partnerships to create more synergy in the organisation’s efforts. International IDEA, based in Stockholm in Sweden, is an intergovernmental organisation specialising in expertise on state and electoral systems through means of research and publications. AWEPA (Association of Europeans Parliamentarians for Africa), based in Amsterdam and Brussels, focuses mainly on parliamentary systems in Africa. By joining efforts in these partnerships we expect to create added value for our local partners.
