NIMD welcomes the handover of power to a civilian government in Mali
NIMD welcomes the handing back of power to civilian rule by the junta that illegitimately deposed the democratic rule of President Touré and the Malian constitution three weeks ago.
By appointing the speaker of parliament, Dioncounda Traoré, as constitutionally agreed interim-President, Mali’s democracy has moved back in the right democratic direction. Nevertheless, the challenges facing the new presidency and its temporary national unity government are daunting, with the ongoing rebellion and conflict in the northern part of the country, and the requirement to hold regular elections within 40 days.
NIMD calls upon all actors to respect the democratic course, and to facilitate a peaceful transition to a newly elected government that will serve the interests of all in the country. NIMD’s partner CMDID will continue its work as a platform for political actors to meet and dialogue on consolidating the democratic gains.
