Launch of EFDP
NIMD is proud to announce the launch of the European Foundation for Democracy through Partnership (EFDP) on 15 April.
On April 15 the foundation will be launched in Brussels by José Manuel Barroso, President of the European Commission, Václav Havel, former president of the Czech Republic and chairperson of the EFDP Council of Patrons and Joaquim Chissano, former president of Mozambique.
Co founded by NIMD earlier this year, the EFDP has the mandate ‘to contribute to, and reinforce the impact of European endeavors in democracy assistance across the world’. In the coming years the foundation is to become a knowledge platform where European democracy assistance organizations can share lessons learned, strengthen evaluation capacity and cooperate in joint projects.
The EFDP will also engage in advocacy work in Brussels, promoting a more pronounced European profile in democracy assistance work, and offer funding for urgent projects in areas where democracy comes under threat and existing funding is not adequate.
At the launch event the Council of Patrons, consisting of Václav Havel, Etienne Davignon, Jacques Delors, Richard von Weizsäcker, Bernard Bot and Uffe Ellemann-Jensen, will authorize the first Board of Directors of the EFDP.
