Three NIMD partners from Africa give their opinion on the relation between development and democracy.
Njeri Kabeberi, Executive Director of the Centre for Multiparty Democracy in Kenya, calls for more freedom when it comes to development aid and democracy assistance by international donors. It is important to start reforming existing institutions in Africa. It is not always necessary that you have to support democracy by prescribed methods, she argues. "You can allow more freedom and innovation and that way it will work better for all of us."
Have a look at the following short video interviews Njeri Kabeberi, CMD-Kenya Director; Augustine Magolowondo, coordinator for NIMD’s regional programme in Southern Africa and Adriano Malache, coordinator of NIMD’s programme in Mozambique.
The interviews took place at the conference Democracy and Development on 14 September 2007, organised by the Society for International Development in collaboration with NIMD, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, IDEA, Socires and NCDO. This conference, which concluded a series of lectures and discussions that started in October 2006, was attended by some 170 participants.
The video interviews are an initiative of Euforic, Europe's forum on international cooperation
