Dutch consultancy firm supports NIMD

02 October 2007

In order to strengthen the Centres for Multiparty Democracy in Zambia and Tanzania NIMD entered into a public-private-partnership with the consultancy agency Berenschot Group.

Between November 2007 and March 2008 20 senior consultants will assist the Centres for Multiparty Democracy (CMDs) in Zambia and Tanzania with the institutionalisation of their organisations. This is important for three reasons. First, it enhances the capacity of CMDs to produce tangible results and to operate within transparent and accountable systems. Second, it increases options for attracting external resources. Third, it creates opportunities to decentralise a part of NIMD’s programme management responsibilities over time.

Corporate social responsibility

NIMD Executive Director Roel von Meijenfeldt is enthusiastic about the new cooperation between NIMD and Berenschot, "In the context of corporate social responsibility, it is the first time that the private sector makes expertise available for strengthening democracy through NIMD."

NIMD has facilitated the set up of CMDs in the majority of its programme countries in Africa, Latin America and Asia. The purpose of these local institutions is to provide an impartial platform for multiparty dialogue about necessary political reforms to improve the performance of democracy and to encourage the institutional development of political parties as pillars of democratic political systems.

The Berenschot Group is an independent Dutch consultancy firm with field expertise in public, business and human resource management. The cooperation between NIMD and Berenschot, which is facilitated by EsteamWork, is part of the Berenschot Academy, a 6 month training programme for the firm’s senior consultants. The Berenschot Group picks up the bill for the complete project, with the exception of advice and guidance and logistical support by NIMD staff.
