As Ghanaians prepare for elections, the political parties have presented a joint analysis of the country's democratic system that proposes a number of practical reforms.

The analysis and its recommendations are bundled in a document coined Democracy Consolidation Strategy Paper (DCSP), which was presented to the public at a launch event in Accra on 15 October.

The DCSP offers a comprehensive review of the state of democracy in Ghana and a roadmap on how to advance its performance. It covers most of Ghana’s political institutions, from the constitution to the electoral system, the position of Chiefs and traditional authorities as well as the political participation of women and youth.

The paper recommends that political parties receive public funding and proposes measures to enhance the independence of the Electoral Commission. The paper further proposes that the political parties establish a Centre for Multiparty Democracy to see to the implementation of the recommendation.

The DCSP is an initiative of NIMD’s Ghanaian partner, the Institute of Economic Affairs (IEA). Speaking at the launch event, IEA’s Director Charles Mensa urged political parties to commit themselves to the recommendations and facilitate their implementation.
