Jean Mensa, IEA

Last week, Ghana’s newly elected President, Professor John Mills delivered his first State of the Nation Address in Parliament under the theme: "Rescue Plan for a Better Ghana."

One of the key areas he focused was on Governance. President Mills noted that “All too often we celebrate successful elections and cherish the growth and maturity of our democracy. However, we tend to invest far less in the development of our democratic governance than we reap from it. Under my administration, we will take seriously into account the needs of our governance.”

Parliamentary bills imminent

He continued thus, “Several areas of our governance agenda require legislative intervention. Fortunately, The IEA sponsored Ghana Political Parties Programme which is made up of all the political parties with representation in Parliament has agreed on several draft Bills that will respond to this need. Consequently, the Government will consider these draft Bills for possible Parliamentary enactment in order to fill the void. The Bills are:

· Public Financing of Political Parties Bill, including the creation of an Election Fund for political parties and guaranteed funding for the Electoral Commission;

· A new Political Parties Bill;

· A Presidential Transition Bill.

The IEA is indeed pleased with this development and commitment on the part of the President and his administration to Strengthen The Pillars of Ghana’s Multi-Party Democracy.

A Promising Year

Over the last five years, The Institute’s governance programme had been geared towards investing in our growing democracy.

We are gratified that the time to harvest results has dawned.

The passage unto law of our aforementioned bills is imminent. What a pleasant way to start the year.

We hope that you would continue to support our work and efforts in the coming year.
